Conditions

Ailments we specifically target in our program

We treat all people who are dealing with chronic pain. Here are the conditions that we specialize in.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of inherited connective tissue disorders that can vary in how they affect the body and in their causes. Joint hypermobility (joints that move further than normal), skin hyperextensibility (skin that stretches further than what’s considered normal), and tissue fragility are all common characteristics of EDS.

The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are classified into thirteen subtypes. Each EDS subtype has a different criteria that help lead to diagnosis.

Why our program works in RELIEVING the pain associated with eds

Regular physical therapy is not designed for EDS and can often injure those with EDS or keep them stuck in a pain cycle.  When it comes to EDS, we need to do things differently.

Nervous System Work and Muscular Imbalances
Those with EDS tend to have dysfunctional nervous systems, leading to hypertonic (overactive) and hypotonic (underactive) muscular activity.  This makes it extremely difficult to recruit the correct muscles during a corrective exercise, resulting in injury or lack of healing.  In order to correct this, we must dial it back to isometric connection work to the correct stabilizing muscles and then build strength and stability from there, the right way.

Strengthening the Right Way
Rather than just giving you an exercise and expecting your body to understand how to do it effectively, our physical therapists and occupational therapists take you through the intricate process of learning to activate the right stabilizing muscles the right way.

The Diaphragm and Vagus Nerve Activation
Activating your diaphragm and vagus nerve are essential for healing the EDS body.  We utilize breathwork and vagus nerve activation in Phase 1 of the Work Pain Free Program and give you the tools to continue this work for the rest of your life.

Mast Cell Dysfunction
Those with EDS can often have mast cell dysfunction and histamine sensitivity.  Mast cells live in connective tissue and when they have dysfunction, connective tissue issues can flare.  We address this with our nutritionist, Karen Kennedy, MS, who specializes in EDS and working with mast cell dysfunction.

Dysautonomia
Dysautonomia is a group of disorders in which the autonomic nervous system has become dysregulated.  Dysautonomia can cause chronic pain as well as muscular weakness, making pain flares worse.  We treat dysautonomia with supplements, hormonal balancing, stabilizing blood sugar, increasing your ability to exercise and nutritional planning with our nutritionist, Karen Kennedy, MS.

Ergonomics
People with hypermobility are very vulnerable to the negative effects that can occur from repetitive motions.  Sitting, standing, sleeping, driving and working can all cause muscular imbalances to form and become more severe.  It is essential that we correct this with the support of our ergonomists, Mindy Colucci and Serafine Lilien.  We provide monthly ergonomic evaluations in our program, where we do a deep dive in assessing your repetitive motions and how they can be done to heal rather than harm the body.

In Depth Education
We believe that you need to deeply understand your body and why it’s hurting in order to heal it.  Just giving you exercises isn’t enough; we need to change the way that you live your life in order to heal it.  We’ve found it’s necessary to fully understand and be aware of what’s happening in our bodies in order to live pain free.

fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain and spinal cord process painful and nonpainful signals.

Why our program works in relieving the pain associated with fibromyalgia

Nervous System Work and Muscular Imbalances
Fibromyalgia is caused by a multitude of issues including nervous system dysfunction.  This results in the over-recruitment of hypertonic (overactive muscles) throughout the body, resulting in widespread pain. It is essential to treat this as a root issue that is stopping people from healing.

The Diaphragm and Vagus Nerve Activation
Activating your diaphragm and vagus nerve are essential for healing widespread pain.  We utilize breathwork and vagus nerve activation in Phase 1 of the Work Pain Free Program and give you the tools to continue this work for the rest of your life.

Nutrition
Fibromyalgia is a systemic issue that requires a holistic solution.  Hormonal imbalances, food sensitivities, poor gut health, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune illnesses and other underlying issue can keep those with fibromyalgia from healing.  Our nutritionist works with those with fibromyalgia to address underlying issues to give solutions that are not commonly addressed in western medicine.

Ergonomics
One of the main triggers of fibromyalgia is repetitive motions.

Hypermobility

Why our program works in relieving the pain associated with Hypermobility

Underlying Conditions
Those with hypermobility can tend to have other contributing health factors that can increase ligament laxity including but not limited to hormonal imbalances, food sensitivities and other underlying conditions.  Our nutritionist specializes in working with those with hypermobility to address underlying conditions and symptoms that are exacerbating pain.

Dysautonomia
Dysautonomia is a group of disorders in which the autonomic nervous system has become dysregulated.  Dysautonomia can often accompany hypermobility and can cause chronic pain as well as muscular weakness, making pain flares worse.  We treat dysautonomia with supplements, hormonal balancing, stabilizing blood sugar, increasing your ability to exercise and nutritional planning with our nutritionist, Karen Kennedy, MS.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is an incredibly difficult condition to live with in which various parts of the body experience severe pain over a long period of time.  If you are dealing with chronic pain that hasn’t healed with typical methods of treatment, you aren’t alone.  This is why our program exists.

Why our program works in relieving chronic pain

Nervous System Work and Muscular Imbalances
Chronic pain is a nervous system issue as much as it is a musculoskeletal issue.  It is essential that we focus on calming and “rewiring” the nervous system to be able to recruit the right muscles to stabilize your body.  The Work Pain Free Program focuses on first rewiring the nervous system and then following your body’s pace to heal muscular imbalances head to toe.

Strengthening the Right Way
Rather than just giving you an exercise and expecting your body to understand how to do it effectively, our physical therapists and occupational therapists act as your coach to take you through the intricate process of learning to activate the right stabilizing muscles the right way.

The Diaphragm and Vagus Nerve Activation
Activating your diaphragm and vagus nerve are essential for healing chronic pain.  We utilize breathwork and vagus nerve activation in Phase 1 of the Work Pain Free Program and give you the tools to continue this work for the rest of your life.

Mental and Emotional Stress
Stress and trauma can play a significant role in why your chronic pain isn’t healing.  As a part of our program, our mental health professionals provide therapeutic groups to address this and help you heal as a whole person.  This is an optional part of the program and there for those who want it.

Self Myofascial Release
We ship our clients self myofascial release (self massage tools) for muscular imbalances head to toe.  Practicing this form of body work is one of the first steps to heal severe muscular imbalances leading to chronic pain.

Video Program via App
In addition to the sessions and coaching support that we offer, our program provides each client with a tailor made video corrective exercise program to correct pain points head and muscular imbalances to toe.  Clients keep this video program for life.  The goal is to make you the expert so that you don’t have to keep coming back to practitioners for pain relief.

Degenerative Disc Disease and Disc Issues

Degenerative Disc Disease is a disorder characterized by degeneration between vertebrae which can cause severe pain that increases over time. Other disc issues can include bulging discs and herniated discs.

Why our program works in relieving the pain associated with ddd

Muscular Imbalances
Degenerative Disc Disease, bulging discs and herniated discs are not often a root cause, but symptoms of a root cause.  The most typical cause of DDD that we see is muscular imbalances.  Muscular imbalances pull the muscles that stabilize the pelvis and compress the discs.  Once these muscular imbalances are corrected, we often see clients with DDD report significant improvement in symptoms that have been escalating for years.

Self Myofascial Release
We mail our clients self myofascial release (self massage tools) for muscular imbalances head to toe.  Practicing this form of body work is one of the first steps to heal severe muscular imbalances leading to DDD.
